On the way home tonight I noticed that the new Stumptown Coffee is, in fact, going in right near my apartment - in a spot where I could have sworn there was previously a different coffee shop. I decided to stop by and check it out, but peering in from outside I couldn't tell if it was actually open. The counter and tables were all set up, there were random people wandering around inside, socializing - but the front of the shop was a bit of a mess, and there was a guy meticulously painting the window signs. I went in anyway, and lo and behold they actually were open despite their somewhat-incomplete state.

Sitting here, though, I'm realizing that I actually kind of like it this way. It has the same sense of being in a warehouse that the one I went to in Portland did, but this one is smaller, more Seattle-sized. It's nice being in a place where there is a sense of more work going on that the business of filling orders for coffee, where things are a bit more scattered and in-progress. Even the faint smell of paint wafting from the window work seems to have gone from being annoying and distracting to oddly comforting. And hey, they've got coffee, wifi, tables and chairs. What more could you really ask for?

I will admit, however, that I was secretly hoping they'd have magically-imported Voodoo Donuts.
