The changing of the seasons.
Sep. 11th, 2007 07:32 pmOne of the strangest things of spending a year in Hawaii was the effect it had on my perception of the seasons. Because it's an equatorial island climate, there isn't much variation in the seasons - maybe 10 degrees cooler in the winter, and rainier. There is no variation in the composition of the air, no change in smells, or allergen levels, or in tree behaviour. But because I moved there in the summer, and left the next summer, it felt like I'd left the weather on "pause" for a whole year.
It's very strange to look back on that year from my current perspective. Every single cell in my body knows it is now autumn; I cannot escape the rhythm of the earth than any more than I could stop breathing. Strange to think I could be immune to that for a year. Strange to think I could survive such a thing.
