"As light hits the sea surface, water molecules and other materials in seawater tend to absorb longer wavelengths and scatter shorter ones. Consequently, blue and green light are scattered and penetrate deep in the sea, while red and yellow are absorbed, usually within the top 20 meters (65 feet) or so. If someone is cut while SCUBA diving at depths below about 20 meters, the liquid oozing from the wound appears - in horror-movie splendor - blue-green in color."
