Vegetarian is the new Prius
Jan. 18th, 2007 10:48 pmI'm vegetarian for two reasons: One, I just plain old don't like most meat. And two, eating meat is bad for the environment. It costs a ridiculous amount in terms of energy and carbon production.
So just now, somebody on the vegetarian mailing list at work posted a link to this awesome blog article: Vegetarian is the new Prius, on all the ways eating meat impacts the environment. Some good bits:
* [A] U.N. report says almost a fifth of global warming emissions come from livestock [...] --that's more emissions than from all of the world's transportation combined.
* [...] researchers found that, when it's all added up, the average American does more to reduce global warming emissions by going vegetarian than by switching to a Prius.
* Animal agriculture takes up an incredible 70% of all agricultural land, and 30% of the total land surface of the planet.
Food for thought.
