Oklahoma has just passed legislation banning publicly-funded libraries from placing children's books with gay themes in the children's section.
I grew up in Oklahoma, and I'm not terribly surprised but I am very disappointed nonetheless. I love my home state. I firmly believe it is one of the most beautiful places in North America. I can't begin to put into words how moving it is to see, hear, and smell an enormous thunderstorm marching across the plain.
I used to imagine that when it finally came time for me to retire to some place, I would retire to Oklahoma and sit and watch the storms all summer long.
But it is also full of hateful, intolerant people, and I imagine that will keep me away for a long time yet.
