Oklahoma write-up, day 1
Dec. 29th, 2004 10:23 pm(My write-up of my trip to Oklahoma is taking me so long and is so long-winded that I've decided to split it up into multiple posts. Here is Day 1.)
My first day in Oklahoma was all about hanging out with my dad and my sister Mary. Mary picked me up at the airport. It had been so long since flying into Oklahoma I had forgotten that security regulations kept people from meeting me at the gate; so I stood around for a few minutes after deplaning wondering if she was running late. Eventually I caught on and went out of the secured area and we finally saw each other.
I dropped my suitcase off at home and we drove around a bit, not really going anywhere. I remember being amazed at seeing a coffee shop flying pride flags, and also grabbing a last-minute accessory for Dad's present at Radio Shack. We drove to Dad's workplace and waited to pick him up. Mary checked out the music selection on my iRiver, and we talked and I complained about how cold it was. Dad showed up and we rattled off towards Lido.
For those of you not in the know, Lido is this great Vietnamese restaurant in Oklahoma City. Really it's standard fare -- summer rolls, bun, and so forth. But it's always been special to my family. So when I figured out I'd be arriving on my dad's birthday, I knew I wanted to treat him to dinner there (...or at Chelino's, but that's another story).
Anyway, dinner was very nice but not particularly memorable -- I liked it a lot but I don't remember much. I suppose a few things were of note:
- We ordered both chicken and shrimp summer rolls, partly because Mary is allergic to shellfish and partly because my dad had never tried chicken summer rolls and neither had I.
- A year of living on Oahu meant that I ended up getting bun instead of my usual kung pao chicken. I know it sounds odd ordering Chinese food at a Vietnamese restaurant, but theirs was always so good I could never quite bring myself to order anything else until this time.
- From the dinner conversation, I learned that apparently my dad is very familiar with Korean barbecue.
At home we watched part of Dune (SFC miniseries edition) and my dad fell asleep. Instead of finishing Dune I showed Mary the first episode of Dead Like Me. Initially she seemed kind of distant and not interested in it. Later she told me that was because she was so engrossed in it.
