My dinner with Andre
May. 16th, 2004 10:40 pmSo at Juli's urging, I treated myself to "dinner and a movie" tonight. I set out for Ward Center around 6:00. First I stopped by Borders to see how late they'd be open, but I inadvertently got sucked in. I browsed for about half an hour, then picked up a book[1] for dinner and headed out for the restaurants.
Juli had suggested some place that I still can't remember the name of, so we'll call it D&B's. A very festive and comfy-looking Italian restaurant. Unfortunately, a horde of prom revelers were already there, so I went to Brew Moon instead. I had pizza and a beer[2] -- both surprisingly good despite the fact the pizza had shrimp on it. On my way out I got roped into taking a photo for a group of people who had been at the table next to me; one of the women among them also asked what book I had been reading. She had never heard of Heinlein before but seemed genuinely interested.
I went back to Borders, browsed a bit more and picked up a DVD[3], then got a cappuccino and sat down on the balcony just in time for the alcohol and tiredness kicked in. I decided to call the night short, downed my cappuccino, and made a beeline for the cabs (after a brief interruption by the merchandise alarm, which has always hated me apparently.)
A few feet short of home, a group of Japanese tourists crowded the cab while the driver tried in vain to explain the concept of "just a minute, I'm dropping her off." I paid him and ducked out, weaving my way through the tourists. The elevators in sight, I thought I was home free -- but instead the security guard flagged me down and we had a long conversation about this and that. It was nice, but I felt awkward hanging out in front of the security office.
So that's it. My night. Now I am very tired and dehydrated, and have to get up at a reasonable time tomorrow, so good night for now.
[1] "Time Enough For Love", by Robert Heinlein.
[2] "Orion Red" microbrew, don't remember if it was an ale or a lager. Pretty sure it was an ale. I don't generally like beer but this was pretty good.
[3] "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
